Summary

Felipe doesn't believe someone like Caio could ever fall for someone like him。 But over the next fifteen days, everything will change 。。。 If you love Rainbow Rowell and Heartstopper, you'll fall for this body-positive love story about the assumptions we make about each other, and the bravery you need to be yourself。

Felipe is fat。 And he doesn't need anyone to remind him, which is, of course, what everyone does。 That's why he's been waiting for summer: a break from school and the classmates who tease him incessantly。 His plans include catching up on TV, finishing his TBR pile, and watching YouTube tutorials on skills he'll never actually put into practice。

But things get a little out of hand when Felipe's mom informs him that Caio, the neighbour kid from apartment 57, will be spending the next fifteen days with them while his parents are on vacation。 Felipe is distraught because A) he's had a crush on Caio since, well, for ever, and B) Felipe has a list of body image insecurities and absolutely NO idea how he's going to entertain his neighbor for two full weeks。

Suddenly, the days ahead of him that once promised rest and relaxation (not to mention some epic Netflix bingeing) end up bringing a whirlwind of feelings, forcing Felipe to dive head-first into every unresolved issue he has had with himself - but maybe, just maybe, he'll manage to win over Caio, too。

A queer love story for anyone who's ever got into a pool with their shirt on。

And somehow Martins worked in my favorite trope of all time: there was only one bed! I think my main issues with the book were stylistic, and probably entirely due to it being originally written in Portuguese, which is not a language that I’m stylistically familiar with。 4 stars。 TW: fatphobia, homophobia, fatphobic and homophobic slurs and insults, unsupportive parents, body image issues, anxiety, underage drinking 。。。more

"You are beautiful, Felipe。 You really, truly are。"Here the Whole Time is a masterpiece。 Without even meaning to, I flew through it, caught up in the whirlwind of every special and intricate detail of this story。 Every character and their stories mattered to me, and I wish I could hear more。 Please read this book。Content Warnings: bullying, fatphobia, d slur & f slur in ch。 9 & mentions of death。THE HIGHS:• By the end of the first chapter I was entirely invested。 The rest of the book was so well "You are beautiful, Felipe。 You really, truly are。"Here the Whole Time is a masterpiece。 Without even meaning to, I flew through it, caught up in the whirlwind of every special and intricate detail of this story。 Every character and their stories mattered to me, and I wish I could hear more。 Please read this book。Content Warnings: bullying, fatphobia, d slur & f slur in ch。 9 & mentions of death。THE HIGHS:• By the end of the first chapter I was entirely invested。 The rest of the book was so well set up from the beginning and had me instantly hooked。• It's not often that you see fat people in fiction that aren't the comedic relief or simple plot piece, and it was so refreshing to see a fat protagonist with his own story and happy ending。• The whole premise of this book was brilliant, it's so interesting and unique。• Felipe's narration was soooo gooddddd and had me constantly in stitches or borderline balling my eyes out。 In a good way。 Most the time, at least。• Becky and Melissa。 I want a spin-off about them now。 NOW, I tell you。• The main romance was so pure and tender, which I always adore。THE LOWS:• At some times the pacing felt weird, going from a little too slow to a little too fast。 It wasn't a major problem, though。 Just something that irked me a little。• That's it。 I love books that I just, have hardly a problem with at all。"I think anywhere is good if I'm with you。" 。。。more

This story captured me from the start, Felipe is wonderful and relatable i just connected instantly。 I truly felt with him in every moment, the impact of those around him and how he felt about himself。 I have been fat since i was a teen and i remember the exact feelings Felipe mentions here, the name calls and the looks - the fear of others seeing and the clothing。 So i loved seeing him through the story overcoming the views of others and finding friendship, gaining strength and realizing that e This story captured me from the start, Felipe is wonderful and relatable i just connected instantly。 I truly felt with him in every moment, the impact of those around him and how he felt about himself。 I have been fat since i was a teen and i remember the exact feelings Felipe mentions here, the name calls and the looks - the fear of others seeing and the clothing。 So i loved seeing him through the story overcoming the views of others and finding friendship, gaining strength and realizing that everyone has their own struggles。The romance is full of soft vibes and all those first love feels, i adored the development between Caio and Lipe as they realised each others feelings。 I enjoyed their discussions, how they support and admire each other constantly。 "Amazing things might happen if you just begin to talk。" Both have a lot of fears in their own lifes and are affected in different ways, Felipe with his anxiety and views on fat。 While Caio with being gay and fears of coming out, how others treat him and worries over his mums views。 Yet together they find comfort and reassurance, they're so sweet and i adore their relationship。 I loved the side cast so much too! Caio's best friend Becky and her girlfriend Mel are stunning, i enjoyed learning about their relationship and their effect on Felipe was wonderful。 "Conversations that teach us new things are the best ones,"Allowed him to see another pov and find his own strength, with their encouragement and hints。 Becky is fat and confident, she says what she believes in and doesn't let what others say faze her。 Mel has her own discomfort despite being skinny and i liked that we got to see all these different teens, with their own problems and ways of handling life - it felt very real and true。 "Good thing my body isn't here to please anyone else, isnt it?"There is exploration of so much here from coming out, therapy and mental health。 Felipe has therapy each week and it was great to see, him letting all of his emotions out in a safe way and the challenges his given to help him move forward were perfect。 I have so much i could talk about with this book as it just grabbed my heart。 I enjoyed the idea of themed nights, musical wednesdays is great。 The pool, street party, red shirt, all of the nerdy moments, movies, reading and the art class - i enjoyed the children。 Its easier to stand up for others then yourself sometimes and Eddie was adorable, i loved the drawings! Overall this book was an incredible read and one i would have loved in my teens too, its got perfect feel good scenes while tackling important themes and i enjoyed every moment 💕 "The world is yours," 。。。more

It's just great to read a fat-positive queer story, written with such heart and enthusiasm。 Truth is, we need more authors like Vitor Martins to write about these so often overlooked human experiences。 It was also such a quick but insightful look at life in a small Brazilian town and felt true, even the terrible parts。 There are, at times, a lot of fourth-wall-breaking which I didn't think was so interesting narrative-wise but will allow because it made me laugh。 Can't wait to read his other sto It's just great to read a fat-positive queer story, written with such heart and enthusiasm。 Truth is, we need more authors like Vitor Martins to write about these so often overlooked human experiences。 It was also such a quick but insightful look at life in a small Brazilian town and felt true, even the terrible parts。 There are, at times, a lot of fourth-wall-breaking which I didn't think was so interesting narrative-wise but will allow because it made me laugh。 Can't wait to read his other stories, especially in Portuguese。 I feel like there was some magic lost in the translation (this isn't a criticism to the translator)。A criticism I do have is the cover。 It would have been great to see Lipe as he is (full body) instead of this close-up situation。 The main character is fat, please just put him on the cover (or somewhere)。 。。。more

。。。more

DNF @ 34%I’m going through a bit of a reading slump so maybe that’s added to it, but I do not care about anything going on, sort of。 I liked the commentary on what it’s like to be plus-size/fat (that’s how the MC describes himself, fyi)。 I understood the issues with body confidence etc。 The romance was a bit flat, I won’t lie。 I wasn’t totally in love with Felipe and Caio, there wasn’t that much between them at the point I got to。 Also I just didn’t find myself particular invested in the charact DNF @ 34%I’m going through a bit of a reading slump so maybe that’s added to it, but I do not care about anything going on, sort of。 I liked the commentary on what it’s like to be plus-size/fat (that’s how the MC describes himself, fyi)。 I understood the issues with body confidence etc。 The romance was a bit flat, I won’t lie。 I wasn’t totally in love with Felipe and Caio, there wasn’t that much between them at the point I got to。 Also I just didn’t find myself particular invested in the characters。 Becky was kind of annoying, Felipe could be a bit dramatic but I liked Caio I guess。 Maybe I’ll give this another go at some point but right now I’m just not interested。 。。。more

this was a very quick read for me and i did enjoy parts of it but it wasn't very memorable for me。 i really loved the character as you could tell how much love was put into creating them and i especially enjoyed filepe's mother and his therapist, i thought they were both very well written in their quirks and support! i also really appreciated this book actually showing teenage boys willingly wanting to go to therapy and being an active participant in the bettering of their own mental health beca this was a very quick read for me and i did enjoy parts of it but it wasn't very memorable for me。 i really loved the character as you could tell how much love was put into creating them and i especially enjoyed filepe's mother and his therapist, i thought they were both very well written in their quirks and support! i also really appreciated this book actually showing teenage boys willingly wanting to go to therapy and being an active participant in the bettering of their own mental health because we all know how untrue that usually is。 i also enjoyed the way filepe's thoughts and feeling and acceptance of his body and looks came across because it was very relatable。 i think this is absolutely the perfect book for so so many people, but despite enjoying it in the moment, i just don't think it is for me but please don't let this discourage you from checking it out if you're truly interested! 。。。more

Felipé can’t wait for winter break (July in Brazil) where he can spend time watching his favorite tv shows and get away from bullies at school。 When he comes home, his mother tells him that their neighbor, Caio, is staying with them for 15 days while Caio’s parents take a vacation to Chile。 A long time ago Felipé and Caio were friends who spent time in the community pool。 After gaining weight and becoming the fodder for fat jokes, Felipé avoided the pool and he and Caio drifted apart。 Now, they Felipé can’t wait for winter break (July in Brazil) where he can spend time watching his favorite tv shows and get away from bullies at school。 When he comes home, his mother tells him that their neighbor, Caio, is staying with them for 15 days while Caio’s parents take a vacation to Chile。 A long time ago Felipé and Caio were friends who spent time in the community pool。 After gaining weight and becoming the fodder for fat jokes, Felipé avoided the pool and he and Caio drifted apart。 Now, they are forced to sleep in the same room, and Felipé, who is gay, may have a crush on Caio。 I absolutely loved HERE THE WHOLE TIME。 I was 100% invested in Felipé’s story。 It’s not often we see fat people represented in stories, especially queer fat people。 I adored this book because it’s not preachy about self-acceptance or hiding Felipé’s feelings。 There are no crash diets。 No weight loss strategies to find love。 This story is about the acceptance of fat people in one’s self。 It has a very positive representation of therapy。 So many lovely moments are littered through this book that my heart was broken for Felipé but I was also smiling the whole time。 Representation matters。 I hope a lot of queer fat kids are able to find this book。 I know I could have used this when I was a teen。 If you’re looking for a gentle YA book with a good story, I highly recommend this。 。。。more

This was such a cute, light-hearted and funny story! I loved how we see Felipe turn into a more self-secured boy not only by getting a boyfriend who tells him he is beautiful just the way he is, but also because of his new friends, his loving mom, and great therapist。 This story shows us how important our loved ones are and how they can start-up or create great and beautiful changes as long as we are able to trust them。
